The main collection has over 9400 cataloged items ranging from hardback, paperback, DVD, VHS, cassette tape and CD materials as well as non-cataloged items such as newspapers and magazines. The professional collection has over 1000 DVD and VHS format items as well as print materials. Subscription online databases include NetTrekker, Proquest, Facts on File, TeachingBooks.net, and DKC Central which are available at school or at home for students and staff. Athena library system provides computerized library search function for student/staff use and circulation/cataloging functions.
Computer
Hill School students use computers extensively. Students in grades 2nd-6th attend at least two classes a week in the computer lab. The activities in these classes are closely coordinated with those from the Language Arts classes. In addition, these students learn and practice keyboarding skills. The 7th graders participate in a year-long keyboarding course and the 8th graders learn basic computer applications using the Office suite of programs. Students in the high school take Desktop Publishing, typically in 9th grade. They may also choose to sign-up for the Media elective.
We have a total of 115 computers available for use by our 225 students. Each classroom has a computer which is connected to the TV to enhance student viewing. There are three computer labs, shared by the regularly scheduled computer classes and other classes on a sign-up basis. The newest addition to our computer equipment is a 15-notebook computer cart. Teachers can check out these wireless computers to use in their classrooms.
Every computer is connected to the Internet through an ISDN connection. Each computer has filtering software running on it which helps block inappropriate sites. Students are also asked to review and sign an Acceptable Use Policy form before using the Internet.
Accelerated Reader
The Accelerated Reader program for grades 2-6 provides students with incentives to read to remember. They select a book from A.R. selections, read it, then go to the computer and take a test. The program assigns points earned for passing the test with at least 80% accuracy. Rewards are earned as students earn more points.
Physical Education
Students in 2nd-5th grades participate in physical education at least three times a week. Students in 6th-8th grades participate in physical education
every day. Student in high school are required to take 1.5 credits of physical education as graduation requirements.
