Head of School

Position available July 1, 2017

The Head of School reports to the Board of Trustees and performs specific duties and authority as may be assigned by the Board of Trustees.  Works in partnership with the Board to establish and refine the school’s mission, articulates the mission of the school to all constituencies, and supports the mission of the school in working with all constituencies.  The Head of School will embody, manifest and advocate the mission of the school, and will articulate the vision of the school in all endeavors.  Keeps the mission of the school at the center of all activities and ensures the Principal and Administrative staff accurately communicate the mission to families before, during and throughout admission events.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Participates as an ex-officio, non-voting member, and member of all standing committees of the Board.

  • Represents the Board in relations with the faculty, staff, students, parents and patrons of the school.
  • Handles all employment matters, including but not limited to selecting and hiring properly qualified persons to serve as members of the faculty and administration. Facilitates orientation, training, retention and dismissal of direct reports – Principal, Business Manager and Development Director, reorganization of talent, salary adjustments and annual teacher contracts, job assignments, performance evaluations, and preparation of employee handbooks.  Ensures confidentiality and maintenance of personnel records.
  • Provides the Board various scenarios and possibilities for consideration when focusing on the strategic future of the school.
  • Works with the Board, Board chair, and Board committees in carrying out established school policies; reviews policies and make recommendations for changes; attends meetings, prepares reports, maintains Board records, and keeps Board informed on all aspects of the school’s operations.
  • Ambassador of the school in all dealings with other public and private schools, professional organizations, current and prospective parents, students, alumni, business community, faculty, and staff.
  • Represents the school in relations with state and federal agencies, and with local, state, regional, and national educational organizations and accrediting agencies.
  • Ensures Hill School reflects the principles of respect and the dignity of each individual, student, faculty and staff.
  • Supervises:
  • Business Manager – ensures preparation of preliminary and final budgets; monitors income, expenditures, collections, and cash flow. Maintains appropriate financial records and oversees the employee Benefits Program.
  • Development Director – supports identification of the most financially stable and charitable entities, civic and community groups and other public and private foundations to be contacted for financial support of the school’s programs and mission, to enhance the school’s reputation throughout the community and surrounding area.
  • Principal – oversees and provides leadership to the day to day operations of the school, provides a welcoming and nurturing environment for all students and families, provides guidance and direction to teachers and administrative staff, handles all student and teacher issues, working towards quick and confidential resolution, and provides updates and input to Head of School for “need-to-know” issues.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 4 year Bachelor’s degree required.
  • MA Education, MA Leadership in Teaching, M Education or MBA required.
  • Ed.,D. Educational & Organizational Leadership a plus.
  • At least 10 years progressive responsibility in an Educational, Business, Marketing or Non-Profit environment.
  • Progressive management and financial responsibility.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, professional presentation and communication skills – written and oral, and attention to details a must.
  • Strong leadership and presentation skills.
  • Self-motivated, empathetic and a problem solver.
  • Background check, pre-employment drug screen, and references required.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience working in an educational environment, institution, or non-profit organization that provides programs and services to children, young adults, or individuals with special needs or learning differences.
