Hill School Students Celebrate Holiday Traditions at Cook Children's During Annual Performance
Performance mirrors 'real life' as students hold canned food drive
Fort Worth, Texas—Elementary students from Hill School, an innovative non-profit school that teaches students with learning differences, will perform the holiday musical "December in Our Town," at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, in the medical center atrium.
The musical portrays students collecting canned goods for a school food drive while celebrating the December traditions – Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Las Posadas and Christmas. As the children in the story experience the different traditions, they also discover common themes: joy, peace, love and hope.
Like the students portrayed in the musical, Hill School students are also collecting canned food, which will be donated to Mission Arlington.
Since October, 48 students from grades two through six have been rehearsing, with the assistance of Hill High School student tech crews. The 40-minute musical, written by Roger Emerson, provides an exciting opportunity for Hill students to share their holiday joy with Cook Children's patients, their families and hospital staff. Hill School teachers Marian Lee and Debbie Cockerham serve as co-directors.
Hill School students present a holiday musical each year, and the collaboration between the high school and elementary school provides opportunities for service for both age groups. Music, theater and art are crucial elements in the Hill School mission -- helping students with learning disabilities thrive in the classroom and beyond.
Students will also perform the musical for students, teachers and parents at special assemblies on Thursday, Dec. 10, at the school at 4817 Odessa.
