Part-Time ASL Teacher Job Description

Teachers deliver engaging, individualized, and multi-sensory instruction that meets students where they are and supports their academic, social, and emotional growth. In partnership with colleagues and families, educators nurture confidence, character, and scholarship within a supportive, respectful, and empowering school community.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Education, Education, or a related field (required)

  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) (required)
  • Certification in Deaf or Hard of Hearing Education (preferred)
  • Experience teaching ASL and/or working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students (preferred)
  • Experience supporting students with learning differences (preferred)
  • Valid Texas Teaching Certification or eligibility to obtain certification (preferred)

Skills/Knowledge

  • Strong proficiency in ASL, including expressive and receptive skills
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners and learning styles
  • Strong communication skills with students, families, and colleagues in both ASL and written English
  • Collaborative mindset and positive, student-centered attitude
  • Excellent organizational and classroom management skills
  • Commitment to professional growth and inclusive, culturally responsive practices
  • Demonstrate effective organizational, scheduling, and lesson-planning skills
  • Produce accurate, up-to-date records, documentation, and student progress reports in a timely manner
  • Maintain confidentiality of student, staff, and family records and information
  • Possess high standards of personal and professional conduct

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement engaging, high-quality ASL lessons aligned with student learning profiles
  • Provide instruction focused on ASL vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and Deaf culture
  • Use formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress and guide instruction
  • Maintain a structured, supportive classroom environment that promotes respect, inclusion, and student confidence
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and goals Collaborate with colleagues to support student success across academic and social-emotional domains
  • Participate in school-wide events and extracurricular activities
  • Attend team meetings, professional development, and actively contribute to the school community
