Support Specialist Job Description

Goal

To foster a positive and supportive educational environment, the Support Specialist implements hands-on interventions that promote the development of prosocial behaviors. The Support Specialist maintains clear and consistent professional boundaries while working collaboratively with administrators and staff to lead outreach initiatives. Additionally, the Support Specialist facilitates professional learning for staff and the broader school community through collaborative, proactive, and relationship-centered practices. This role plays a critical part in supporting students, their families, and school staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, school psychology, counseling, social work, special education, or a related field; Master’s or Specialist degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in education, psychology, social work, counseling, case management, or a related field, with a strong emphasis on supporting students with learning differences.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students who exhibit social, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges, including those with significant needs.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and monitoring behavior, intervention, and safety plans using evidence-based and data-driven practices.
  • Licensed Specialists in School Psychology, School Psychologists, Behavior Specialists, Certified Special Education Teachers, Licensed Professional Counselors, or related professional credentials preferred.

Skills/Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of behavior management strategies, de-escalation techniques, and appropriate interventions for students with social-emotional and behavioral needs.
  • Experience supporting classroom practices, coaching staff, and leading or contributing to MTSS frameworks to promote positive behavior and social-emotional growth.
  • Skilled in using data to inform decision-making, enhance student supports, collaborate with families, and build sustainable systems.
  • Knowledge and application of counseling, coaching, and/or mentoring techniques with students and adults.
  • Proven ability to build positive, collaborative relationships with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners.
  • Experience providing group professional development, in-service training, and/or individualized technical assistance.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain accurate, timely documentation, and reports.
  • Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality, ethical practice, and high standards of personal and professional integrity.
  • Ability to promote positive morale and a supportive school culture among staff, students, and the broader school community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and consultative support to students and staff by implementing strategies that promote self-regulation and address moments of dysregulation before, during, and after they occur.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized intervention, behavior, and safety plans; consult with and train teachers and staff to ensure consistent implementation.
  • Collaborate with families regarding educational, social, emotional, and behavioral concerns, maintaining strong partnerships and clear communication.
  • Assist with referrals and coordination of outside supports and community resources, as needed.
  • Provide short-term direct support and consultation to students, staff, and families in response to identified needs.
  • Support families with transitions to and from Hill School, including transitions to public school or other educational settings.
  • Participate in and support parent/teacher and parent/administration conferences.
  • Collaborate with internal staff, service providers, and external stakeholders to ensure coordinated and comprehensive student support.
  • Plan and deliver professional development, staff training, parent education, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Support master scheduling, college and career readiness activities, and student planning as needed (e.g., FAFSA, PSAT, SAT, college applications).
  • Assist with campus assessments, school events, and other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
